Nebraska Junior Law Cadet Program Provides Unforgettable Experience

by Lawson Zierke
Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Nebraska Junior Law Cadet Program at the Nebraska State Patrol Training Academy in Grand Island. As an incoming high school senior with a strong interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement, the experience gave me a firsthand look at the challenges, responsibilities, and rewards of serving the public.
Being selected for the program was an honor. To apply, I wrote an essay explaining why I wanted to attend, obtained several recommendations, and completed an interview process. Out of applicants from across Nebraska, 27 young men were chosen to participate.
During the two-day academy, we were introduced to many different areas of law enforcement. We learned/trained on firearms safety, watched K-9 demonstrations, participated in criminal investigation activities, and I even got to detonate a bomb. One of the highlights for me was learning about emergency vehicle operations and seeing the extensive training officers complete to safely respond to emergencies. After learning I then got the chance to drive the course in an emergency situation!
What impressed me most was the professionalism and dedication of the Nebraska State Patrol troopers and instructors. They took the time to answer our questions, share stories from their careers, and explain the responsibilities that come with wearing the badge. Their commitment to protecting Nebraska communities was evident throughout the entire program.
The Nebraska Junior Law Cadet Program was much more than an educational experience. It taught me valuable lessons about leadership, discipline, teamwork, and personal responsibility. It also strengthened my desire to pursue a career in law enforcement.
I am especially grateful to the Pierce American Legion for sponsoring me and to the Nebraska State Patrol for providing this outstanding opportunity. The experience gave me a greater appreciation for the work law enforcement officers do every day and left me with memories and lessons that I will carry with me for years to come.
